Daenerys as an anti-Cinderella?
It’s always fun to wonder which fairy tales goes best with which asoiaf characters (especially the girls, for some reason). For Sansa and Arya, the references are overflowing. With Dany it’s… trickier. Only two – or maybe three – classic tales really fit. Two of those I’ve already talked about in previous posts (Thumbelina and The Fire... Continue Reading →
The sack of Astapor, one last time
I didn’t think I’d have the energy for this, but here I am. The sack of Astapor. The most fetishized episode by Dany antis and their indubitable proof that Dany only does good deeds when those deed profit her. She got an army for her trouble, for free! How convenient is that? I’ll start by... Continue Reading →
The curious case of the dornish meal
The curious case of the dornish meal The feast continued late into the night, presided over by the grinning skull on its pillar of black marble. Seven courses were served, in honor of the seven gods and the seven brothers of the Kingsguard. The soup was made with eggs and lemons, the long green peppers stuffed with cheese... Cat is a smart cat
Cat is a smart cat It was while reading “Cat of the canals” in AFFC that I first wondered if, perhaps, there wasn’t some “Puss in Boots” elements to Arya’s storyline. Looking back now, it’s pretty obvious that Arya’s tribulations as “Cat” weren’t even the meatiest part of it. Cats in classic children literature can... Continue Reading →
On costume symbolism
On Dany’s new black dress https://gameofthrones.fandom.com/wiki/Daenerys_Targaryen 1) It looks like it’s made of leather. Now, I wasn’t sure about this so I did a quick google search… and yes, leather could be “boiled” and used as an armor. Leather armors were lighter than steel and rigid enough to absorb a great many shocks. Dany’s dress,... Continue Reading →
On pregnancy subtext
Bran Stark in ADWD: caves, moons, wolves and other thoughts Bran’s last ADWD gave me pause for a lot of details: how they all nestled beneath the earth while the wolves outside hunted and ate frozen wights, for a start. It reminded me of the wolves invading the lands north of King’s Landing at the... Continue Reading →
“You can’t break the wheel if you’re dead!”
Worried about Dany? So am I, but… The “break the wheel” speech never appeared in the books. As far as we know, it was a D&D invention and D&D… have known for a long time how Dany’s story would end. No matter the endgame in store for Dany, it will involve something that will equate breaking... Continue Reading →
A “chain of intent”
Dany’s dragon chain in season 7 I know Clapton said it was supposed to represent a crown without being a crown, but doesn’t it also give off a “dragon in chains” vibe (Dany being the dragon)? I’ve had this feeling for a while that Dany felt a bit “chained” during season 7.
